Step 7 - Kill the infections

One of the most effective ways of killing Lyme disease and other infections is by using antibiotic IV therapy or antibiotics in general and if that’s the path you decide to take then use our list of recommended private doctors who can prescribe antibiotics. However, you can treat Lyme disease using natural, herbal remedies that when combined with a lifestyle overhaul and adequate supplementation can be very effective. Any treatment should start with a low small dose to gauge any adverse reaction and then tolerance should be built up from there. If you experience a flare up of symptoms when starting treatment than you should pause treatment and allow your body time to recuperate before resuming treatment again. 

Antibiotics

It goes without saying that antibiotics are a very effective way of treating Lyme disease. I started my treatment using antibiotics and they did give me a sense of normalcy after a rather horrid period of being incredibly sick. Despite hitting multiple combinations of antibiotics, I didn’t achieve total remission. So even though antibiotics are a fast and effective way of treating Lyme and co-infections there are natural herbs and medicines that can be as effective over a longer period of time and you don’t need a doctor to sign off on them. What’s more, natural medicines won’t kill off healthy good bacteria in your gut in which 80% of your immune system is based. If you pursue the antibiotic route an experienced Lyme doctor won’t prescribe you just one type of antibiotic, you can expect to be taking anything from two to even five different types of antibiotics. There are three known forms of Lyme disease, the spirochete, cyst and biofilm forms. Some antibiotics are only effective against the spirochete form, some the cyst and some the biofilm. This is why you need to take multiple antibiotics at the same time. Doxycycline for example which is prescribed on the NHS for Lyme is only effective against the spirochete form. Depending on what coinfections you have the doctor may also need to prescribe you an antibiotic that targets parasitic infections. Different antibiotics have been shown to be effective against different coinfections.

The Buhner Protocol

Stephen Buhner is a world-renowned herbalist and comes from a long line of healers. His core protocol for Lyme uses three herbs and has five key philosophy points. Firstly, to support collagen within the body, restore and support the immune system, reduce inflammation, treat the symptoms and then finally kill the bacteria. The core protocol is as follows.

1. Japanese knotweed root (Polygonum cuspidatum)
   • Powder: 1 tsp – 1 TBS of the root powder 3x daily. Start at the lower dose and work up, OR . . .

3. Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata)

The protocol above is his basic Lyme disease protocol which is effective for about 75% of patients depending on what coinfections of Lyme disease you have. However, in his book Healing Lyme he has a more expanded protocol to help treat Lyme and specifically target other co-infections. The Cowden Protocol

The Cowden protocol is a holistic and multifaceted approach to tackling Lyme Disease using powerful anti-microbials that address all forms of Lyme. Biocidin LSF

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Grapefruit seed extract or GSE is an ideal thing to take alongside doxycycline. The reason is that GSE can kill the bio-film form of Lyme disease which doxycycline can’t, it’s a very powerful natural antibiotic. I recommend starting off with a couple of drops in your water to gauge your body’s reaction and avoid a herxheimer reaction. You can build up your tolerance and slowly increase the number of drops from there on in.
